Volcano Winery- Big Island

By: Kellie Archuletta

As my husband and I drove down the rural street where the winery is located the scenery was lush and obviously Hawaii; huge hibiscus flowers and ginger dotted the landscape, against this backdrop we finally spied some grape vines and knew we had arrived at our desired location.

We parked in the wine-o parking, (yes, the lot was actually labeled with the wine-o sign), and walked in the front door. The winery has two small tasting areas and the day we were there both the attendants were barefoot while serving wine. The winery has four award winning wines that are excellent. The Symphony Wines are traditional wines made with the Symphony Grape, the Hawaiian Guava Wine and the Macadamia Nut Honey Wine are both sweet dessert wines. The winery also has two local wines, both including the locally grown jaboticaba berry.

We left the winery with a nice buzz and some delicious tastes on the palate. If you would like to visit the winery it is located at the 30 mile marker on Highway 11 on Pii Mauna Drive. The brown highway marker sign will have a bunch of grapes under services to note that a winery is located at this turn off.
