If you are a Vegas visitor that has had enough of the slots but is not ready to take a long ride into the desert; you can go less that 20 minutes from the strip and be surrounded by a bird watching area and nature preserve. The Wetlands Park has two loops of approximately two miles that can be hiked upon in relative silence. One loop is cement and very handicap accessible with dirt trails leading into the reeds for a real adventure. The other loop is dirt and very feet friendly if you are sensitive to hard surfaces. The eastern end of the trail follows the Las Vegas Wash and mallards and all types of birds can be viewed at this spot. It is also very pleasant to listen to rush of the water as it flows by the viewing spots. The park is large and very few people visit so it can be a much needed rest from the casinos if you need a breather. You can get to the Wetlands Park by taking Tropicana east, crossing over Boulder Highway and taking a left at the Wetlands Park road. At the end of this road, you will be at the parking lot and trail head of the nature preserve. The Park is free and open from 7am to 7pm.
