It is a National Historic Park so you will have to pay $5.00 for parking but it is worth the fee. You can walk around and see a recreated Hawaiian village and play in the tidal pools. We went on a hike that leads out from the picnic area and eventually to the sea via a lava tube. I wouldn’t suggest going in the lava tube. My husband talked me into it and I bumped my head pretty hard on a low lying lava protrusion. When you decide that you’ve had enough education, walk out of the park down to the beach. The snorkeling here is great and you will not have to fight over a car spot because your car is safe and sound at the National Park. Snorkeling gear is not rented here so bring your own; ditto for water and food. If it is not during the busy season it’s very peaceful. I fell asleep on the beach here once. If it is busy it is standing room only. I’ve seen many beautiful fish here along with some turtles close to shore. Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historic Park is on the Big Island, located on route 160 just follow the signs.
