Maps too are used in business at least for more than just getting their customers to somewhere, they are also used to impress, being found in company brochures and prospectuses of all types. Indeed, maps today are used to promote corporate awareness and branding campaigns. So far from being just a means of getting from a to b, the map now forms an important part of the marketing strategy of many companies. Maps also come in different types, after all a map of a hospital might not be thought of as a map by some, they call it a site plan, but in essence it is a map as it “maps out” the different parts of a site and helps people find their way about. Campus maps are another form of the site plan, and then again there is the floor plan used throughout large business blocks to make sure that no one gets lost. The threat of terrorism and the increased demands of Health & Safety have also led to an increase in the need for Escape Route plans and the like, so that in the event of an emergency, staff and visitors alike can easily find their way to safety. Estate agents are one example of a business that needs maps more than most, as they not only need to be able to navigate their customers to the properties on their books, they also need to be able to show information about the area, where the schools are etc. Large companies with outlets around the country are also in great need of maps as they allow their customers to locate the nearest one, yes maps are essential to many businesses. However, nothing stays the same and the world of cartography and mapping is not immune to the effects of change, the advent of the Internet and Satellite Navigation being just two of the latest to have a major impact. Luckily these two advances have not really diminished the need for maps, but have changed the manner in which they are delivered and used. True the advent of the Sat Nav will have reduced the need for maps for some, but people still like to pour over a paper map, it, it seems being far more enjoyable and understandable that way. The Internet too, whilst of course not being a medium that needs physical maps has in fact increased peoples exposure to maps, with such sites as multimap being used by thousands of people every day. No, the future of maps is assured and whether you are looking for a map for business or pleasure, companies like www.locationmaps.com are well worth a look. So when you next think of the word “map”, give a thought to how they started and how they are being used today. It’s true you won’t see the legend “here be dragons” anymore, but the map is still a source of wonder for most and can be a vitally important part of any businesses marketing strategy too.
