What is Footprints?

Footprints is a micro-payment facility that allows customer contributions to small community aid programs around the world.

Developed by World Nomads, customers purchasing online can choose to add as little as $1 to a program of their choice. Because Footprints programs are small, it doesn’t take many customers to complete full funding.

All programs are provided by and operated by registered charities and NGO’s. Footprints can be integrated as a web service with most e-commerce web sites, and is particularly relevant in Travel and Adventure.

For example, a mere A$1500 buys a fishing boat for a village on Thailand’s west coast, devastated by the Tsunami. Not only does this enable the fishermen to feed the village, it also alleviates the potential debt of these fishermen trying to re-start their lives. Or A$2,500 pays the complete cost of building a 15 metre well with pump in Tanzania … a well that serves over 500 people.

Our experience with World Nomads indicated in excess of 70% of our customers make a contribution to the program of their choice, meaning World Nomads alone could raise funds for each of these projects in about two weeks.

What kind of programs does Footprints fund?

At this point in time, World Nomad’s Footprints is focused on projects related to countries/travel destinations and improving conditions in local communities where travelers receive local hospitality.

Programs are assessed for inclusion in Footprints if they offer tangible, specific micro-projects resulting in long-term, sustainable development gains in underdeveloped communities. These should fall into the broad areas of health, poverty, education, water/sanitation and environment.

The projects and NGOs should also be non-political and non-religious. Emergency relief aid and research-based projects are not covered.

Over time, Footprints may expand and consider other types of programs for inclusion.
