How to make the most of holiday cottages in Devon

By: Audrey Taylor

If you enjoy taking a break in holiday cottages, Devon is the place to stay. The county is an established destination and has plenty of events and activities waiting for you. It also offers wonderfully fresh food and unique local beers and wines.

Events
Every month, Devon hosts a wealth of different events. It’s time well spent if you check these out with the tourist office either before you travel or when you arrive.

A list of events would take up far more room than this article allows. But to give you an idea of what to expect, there’s the Dartmouth Comedy Festival in February; the Plymouth Summer festival from May to September; and the English National Sheep Dog Trials at Castle Filleigh in August.

You may choose to book your holiday cottages in Devon to suit the times of such events. But whenever you visit, you’ll find that something is happening somewhere in the county.

Activity holidays
If you come to Devon for an activity holiday, you’ll certainly keep busy. There are more than 50 golf courses, for instance. These provide greens that are suitable for every level of skill.

If you prefer water sports, you can surf, sail or go diving. You can also try deep-sea angling.

Back on land, you can ride a pony across moorland; gallop a horse on the sand; cycle off-road through forests; or simply walk through some of the UK’s best scenery.

Explore nature
Another opportunity that arises when you book holiday cottages in Devon is to experience some of Britain’s most memorable wilderness areas.

Among the wilderness treks are the 40-mile journey between Lyme Regis and Exmouth. You should also head for the wild areas of North Devon and see Speke’s Mill waterfall, Stanbury Mouth Valley and Hartland Point.

Fresh food and local drink
Such activity is sure to give you a good appetite and a strong thirst. You can choose from hundreds of places to eat and drink throughout the county. But if you decide to self-cater, do try shopping at the farmers’ markets and the farm shops. The food at these is local, fresh and delicious.

And if you’re having an evening in at one of the many holiday cottages Devon has to offer, why not stop at a vineyard and buy some local wine? You may be surprised at just how good it is.
